SAMHSA Rule to Permanently Allow Take-Home Methadone

The White House budget office is reviewing a draft SAMHSA rule that would make permanent the COVID-19 methadone take-home waiver and define which patients with OUD are considered “stable” enough to receive multiple methadone doses instead of traveling daily to the clinic for their medication. The rule would “make permanent some regulatory flexibilities for opioid treatment programs to provide extended take home doses of methadone” and affect nearly 1,800 opioid treatment programs and state opioid treatment authorities.
