SAMHSA releases new research on the effects of COVID-19 on mental health and substance use disorders

Updated: Jun 28, 2021

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) released a new edition of their Supplemental Research Bulletin that reviews research through November 2020 on how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected mental health and substance use. It also includes research on special populations that are experiencing greater impacts such as youth, women, ethnic minorities, and health workers. Research suggests the pandemic-related stressors have posed serious threats to mental health including increases in substance use. The bulletin concludes with suggested interventions and approaches to support mental health and substance use disorders during and after the pandemic by supporting communities and improving systems of care.
